Man Commits Suicide After Arrrest

A man arrested for allegedly attacking his wife committed suicide in his holding cell after surrendering at a Manhattan precinct, police said.

Alexander Gonzalez, 40, was found hanging from his shirt at around 3:20pm local time Saturday inside a holding cell in the Midtown South Precinct on West 35th Street.

According to the New York Post, Gonzalez, who was alone in the cell as police processed his arrest, was later pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.

Earlier in the day, at 7:15am, police had responded to a domestic violence call at Gonzalez's midtown apartment. His 33-year-old wife told cops that he had assaulted her and fled.

She was treated at an undisclosed hospital and released.
