It's not yet clear what sparked the fire, which broke out around 5 a.m. But investigators say there were lots of papers and other clutter inside the home that apparently helped fuel the blaze.

Details on the injuries sustained by the firefighters were not disclosed, but none were considered serious.

Authorities also briefly evacuated three nearby homes that were slightly damaged by the fire, but no other injuries were reported

A man has being charged with shooting and the murder of a former city police officer in South Jamaica, Queens.

Bowlin was pronounced dead early Saturday at a Queens hospital.

Sources say the shooting was over a dice game.

South Jamaica residents told NY1 the area is a safe place.

"It had to be somebody that did not live in this neighborhood, because this neighborhood, mostly, everybody looks out for one another," said Jill Mattocks, an area pastor.

"It's not like he walked around here as an officer, you know? He walked as a neighbor, your next-door neighbor, friendly person, you know?" said neighbor Jacqueline Skyers. "But my whole family, we're so hurt by this tragedy."

No Injuries Reported After Manhole Fire Leads To Evacuations

Manhattan residents have returned to their homes after being evacuated because of a construction fire Friday. NY1's Zack Fink filed the following report.

Crews were working below ground on East 59th Street between First and Second Avenues to replace a water main when feeder cables short circuited Friday, causing a small explosion and fire.

The electrical fire disrupted service, knocking out power and forcing people out of their homes. Officials from the fire department said the explosion was dangerously close to a gas line.

"We had to evacuate the buildings behind the trench site, had the gas shut off on both ends of the block," said FDNY Chief Tom McKavanaugh.

A hole had been dug to replace a water main, and according to the City's Department of Design and Construction, Con Edison decided to use the open street to shore up some electrical wiring.

That's when two feeder cables short-circuited. A series of small explosions followed.

"I was on the phone and the phone went off. Then the light went off, only for a second," said one resident. "Then there was a big noise, like an explosion, but because of the construction I didn't pay attention because the noise is constant. But after 10 to 15 minutes, a fireman walks in and says 'get out, get out, you need to evacuate."

"I work at the Humane Society of New York, and basically all of our lights were flickering, so I came outside and there was a giant smoke plume in the air and they said to back up because there was an electrical fire," said one onlooker. "We were just hoping all of our animals were going to be okay."

All of those animals were okay, as were all the people who live along 59th street between First and Second Avenues who lost power and gas.

Police Seek Gunman Who Injured Young Bronx Boy

Authorities in the Bronx are searching for whomever fired the shot that sent a five-year-old boy to the hospital last night.

Adonte Peartree was walking down the street with his mother when the shots were fired.

He was hit in the leg.

Police say they do not believe the pair was the target.

"Me and my friend was just like in front of the building," said one witness. "All we hear is pow, pow, pow, couple of gunshots and we knew something was going down. And soon as we turned the corner we just see a lot of people scattering, people running everywhere."

Adonte has been released from Jacobi Medical Center.

Anyone with information about the case is being asked to contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-577-TIPS, by texting TIP577 to CRIMES, or by going toNYPDCrimeStoppers.com.

A massive water main break in the Mount Hope section of the Bronx is now under control as crews inspect the cause.

It happened just before 6 a.m. on Jerome Avenue near 177th Street.

At one point, water levels in some sections were waist deep as it flooded the avenue as far south as 174th Street.

The Department of Environmental Protection says it took crews about three hours to stop the flow.

The water main is said to be 103 years old, one of the oldest in the system, and is a feeder into other pipelines.

Local residents are not experiencing water problems, but the rushing water did damage some gas mains, leaving about 600 customers without gas.

"There are a number of factors that could potentially play into a break, pipes are under different pressures, happened to be a main that was taking a tremendous amount of pressure its entire life, so that's not an issue. But we are going to be looking into both at the site of the break, and the forensic evidence is going to tell us something when we're able to get in there," said DEP Commissioner Cas Holloway.

Firefighters remained on scene to make sure no one got stuck in their cars or surrounding buildings.

No major injuries have been reported, but local business owners are not sure what kind of damage the water will bring.

"I can't express what I feel, it's painful, it's painful," said one business owner.

"The whole day, I have to tell my employees to stay home, so I don't know what's going to happen now. We have insurance, but I don't know if they're going to pay for the water," said another.

Meantime, the water main break is causing problems for fans headed to this afternoon's Yankees game.

There is no 4 train service between the 167th Street Station and the Bedford Park Boulevard-Lehman College Station.

That means the train is not stopping at Yankee Stadium.

Fans can take the D or B train to the game.

Some bus routes in the area are also experiencing delays or detours.

DEA Arrests 37 People In Connection To International Drug Bust

Officers from the Drug Enforcement Agency arrested 37 people Wednesday who are alleged to be part of an international drug ring led by Albanians.

Most of the arrests were made in the city, New Jersey, Colorado and Florida.

One of the alleged ringleaders was arrested in Albania.

They're accused of distributing tens of thousands of kilograms of marijuana, cocaine, and prescription medications.

DEA officials say the organization is also responsible for laundering tens of millions of dollars.

They say they also recovered 18 firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition during Wednesday's raid.

"This seizure is symbiotic proof that there's a relationship between narcotics trafficking and violence," said Keith Kruskall of the DEA. "This organization last month was involved in a drug-related shooting in which the organized crime drug enforcement task force made arrests in conjunction with the NYPD of these individuals."

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, "This criminal syndicate injected illegal drugs, including highly addictive oxycodone painkillers, into thousands of lives and subjected neighborhoods to violence ranging from kidnappings to attempted murder. With these arrests, we say good riddance."

Who Is Levi Aron?

"A monster among us" is how neighbors of the suspected child killer are reacting to the shocking discovery of a mutilated body of an eight-year-old being found in Levi Aron's home.

Some referred to Aron as "slightly weird" but did not suspect he was capable of committing the crime he is accused of committing.

Levi Aron, 35, lived on East 2nd Street in Brooklyn.

A mother of four says she saw Aron around the neighborhood and thought he was strange, but harmless. Now she's upset she and her kids were so close to what she called "pure evil."

Neighbors say Aron lived on the top floor of his parents' house for the past two years.

He worked a few blocks from home at the Empire Supply Company.

Police say the only previous criminal act in Aron's background was for public lewdness.

Arun had returned to Brooklyn from Memphis. Aron's ex-wife, 34-year-old Debbie Aron, lives there. She says they met on a Jewish dating website in November 2005. They were married in March of 2006.

The pair didn't have any kids together but he did help raise her two kids, from another relationship.

Says she was in "utter disbelief" when she found out about the crime.

Says he was quiet, loved karaoke and was good with her kids. She says she never saw any red flags.

Records show a request for an order of protection was filed against Aron in 2006 in Shelby County General Sessions Court. The request, filed by his wife, was dismissed. They were granted a divorce in 2007.

Levi Aron worked for Metropolitan Protective from March 2007 to September 2009 on a part time basis. He passed a background check and he passed a state background check and was issued a Tennessee state security guard license. Company records show that he quit to move back to New York.

One Man Drowns, Another Nearly Drowns In S.I. Public Pool

One man died and another man was left critically injured after they were found face-down in a public pool in Tompkinsville, Staten Island this morning.

Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe says the two men, both in their 20s, were found in the Lyons Pool in Tompkinsville around 8:30 a.m.

They were taken to Richmond University Medical hospital, where one of them died about an hour later.

The pool is only about three-and-a-half feet deep, leading to speculation that they may have been participating in training drills that involved swimming underwater.

The man who is listed in critical condition is a Parks Department lifeguard at another pool.

The body of a missing Brooklyn boy was found in a dumpster early Wednesday morning, and police have made one arrest in his murder.
A New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services Missing Child Alert had been issued for 8-year-old Leibby Kleztky, who didn't return to his Borough Park home after a day at a nearby camp.

Assemblyman Dov Hikind tells Eyewitness News that surveillance video released by police of Kleztky near a gold sedan on 18th Avenue between 45th Street and 46th Street led to the arrest.

Related Content
"It was a very brutal murder," Hikind said. "We're all very, very sad. This is the worst possible conclusion imaginable."

The 35-year-old suspect was taken into custody after police and FBI agents went into a house in the Kensington section of Brooklyn just after 4 a.m. Police tracked the man down using the surveillance video and tracing credit-card purchases.

That person, described as a member of the Orthodox Jewish community, reportedly told them to go to the dumpster, on 20th Street off Fourth Avenue in Greenwood Heights. Police found the dumpster's lid open and a suitcase inside that contained portions of the boy's dismembered body. Other parts of the body were reportedly found at the man's home, possibly in a refrigerator.

Police also taped off the house where they found the man, at the intersection of East 2nd Street and Avenue C. At least two other people were also taken out of the house, and a gold car was parked out front.

Kleztky left the Boyan Day Camp at 1205 44th Street Monday evening, but never showed up to meet his mother three blocks away.

On Tuesday night, thousands of neighbors, investigators and detectives helped Leibby's parents search for him.

Leibby was last seen walking by himself wearing black glasses, a gray and light blue striped shirt, navy pants, black sneakers and carrying a blue knapsack saying "Nechmod Day Camp."

Hikind and two anonymous community leaders were offering a $100,000 reward for anyone with information leading to his safe return.
