N.J. Corrections Officer Shot Dead

Authorities in New Jersey say an off-duty Essex County corrections officer has been shot dead in her car, shortly after she left a social club.

Acting County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray says 32-year-old Debora Ferreira of Irvington was shot just before 3 a.m. Sunday on Halsey Street in downtown Newark. She was unresponsive when found and was taken to University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Murray says a motive for the shooting is unknown. She declined to provide further details on the incident, which is under investigation by her office and Newark police.

The mother of a 1-year-old daughter, Ferreira had been with the county corrections department since July 2007.

The Essex County Crime Stoppers have offered a $10,000 reward for information in the case.
