Queens Worker Fatally Shoots Would-Be Robber

A would-be robber was killed early Tuesday morning after police say he was shot inside a Queens supermarket by an overnight stock worker.

Police say the deadly encounter happened just after 2 a.m. at the Met Foods supermarket at Jamaica Avenue and 173rd Street in Jamaica Hills.

Investigators say Mamadou Koureichi, 27, entered through the roof and was shot in the torso by the employee stocking shelves who had been armed with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Koureichi was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say there was some damage to the safe.

"You have to protect what's yours. Like he said, it's a very safe neighborhood, it's quiet. We normally don't hear things like that. So it's bad that it has to come to terms like that, but sometimes whatever's necessary has to be done," said a local.

Investigators have not charged the employee with a crime.
