Driver, 19, Fatally Struck on Long Island Expressway



A 19-year-old man was killed when he tried to cross the Long Island Expressway in Commack and was struck by a car Saturday evening, police said.

Police said the victim, identified as Aaron Thomas of Amityville, had run out of gas on the Expressway westbound in Commack. He left his vehicle parked on a safety zone between the express zone and the entrance ramp, and went to purchase gas on Commack Road.

Thomas was returning with the gas at about 8 p.m. when he was struck at the entrance ramp by a vehicle entering the Expressway, police said.

Thomas was transported to Huntington Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver stayed on the scene and her vehicle was impounded for a safety check, police said. Investigation is continuing.
