Coast Guard rescues six from capsized boat in Queens

The Coast Guard rescued six people after their boat capsized south of Rockaway Beach Saturday morning.

According to the Coast Guard, they received a mayday call around 10:45 a.m. that six people were in the water after their vessel capsized.

NYPD and Nassau County police assisted the Coast Guard with the rescue.

The bouncing boat was upside-down and 80 percent submerged when police arrived at the scene. Authorities said the vessel's bow was sticking up because of an air pocket in the cabin.

NYPD authorities said the rescuers could feel the boat sinking and were about to leave the scene when they saw two feet sticking out of the cabin.

One man was found unconscious and was taken by helicopter to Staten Island University Hospital in critical condition. Five other passengers were transported by the Nassau County police to nearby hospitals with minor injuries.

Police say the incident is under investigation.
