Man mauled at Bronx Zoo to be arrested for trespassing

The 25-year-old man who was mauled by a tiger at the Bronx Zoo will be arrested for trespassing, according to police.

David Villalobos told police the reason he jumped into the tiger's den was to be "one with the tiger."

Villalobos is in stable condition at Jacobi Hospital with bites and punctures to his arms, legs, shoulder and back. He also has a broken arm and leg, police said.

"We anticipate arresting David Villalobos on a trespassing complaint by Bronx Zoo authorities later today or early next week," said NYPD spokesman Paul Browne Saturday afternoon.

According to Browne, Villalobos told police detectives that he voluntarily jumped Friday from the monorail into the tiger den at the Bronx Zoo and that his leap was definitely not a suicide attempt.

An NYPD sergeant asked Villalobos why he jumped into the den and he replied that "everybody in life makes choices," according to Browne.

Villalobos told police he sustained most of his injuries when he landed on all fours inside the predator's den after he jumped from the monorail. When he landed, he awoke the 400-pound Siberian tiger and spent 10 minutes alone with the animal before being rescued.

Villalobos told police he recalled being dragged by the tiger by the foot, and afterwards being able to "pet" the tiger.

Coast Guard rescues six from capsized boat in Queens

The Coast Guard rescued six people after their boat capsized south of Rockaway Beach Saturday morning.

According to the Coast Guard, they received a mayday call around 10:45 a.m. that six people were in the water after their vessel capsized.

NYPD and Nassau County police assisted the Coast Guard with the rescue.

The bouncing boat was upside-down and 80 percent submerged when police arrived at the scene. Authorities said the vessel's bow was sticking up because of an air pocket in the cabin.

NYPD authorities said the rescuers could feel the boat sinking and were about to leave the scene when they saw two feet sticking out of the cabin.

One man was found unconscious and was taken by helicopter to Staten Island University Hospital in critical condition. Five other passengers were transported by the Nassau County police to nearby hospitals with minor injuries.

Police say the incident is under investigation.

NYPD Offering Smartphone Registration for iPhone 5 Launch

The NYPD will be out in force Friday to help the droves of New Yorkers who are buying the newly released iPhone 5 register their devices in order to help combat a rash of thefts and locate them if they are stolen.

The department's Community Affairs Bureau will be stationed at all six Apple stores in New York, as well as eight AT&T stores and seven Verizon locations around the five boroughs.

New owners of the pricey gadgets — retail prices run between $650 and $850 without a contract — can also have their phones engraved with serial numbers beginning with "N.Y.C." under the free program.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said smartphone and other hand-held devices were responsible for a spike in robberies and larcenies this year.

"Individuals alert to their surroundings are less likely to become victims, and Operation ID will help those whose property is lost or stolen to get it back," Kelly said in a statement.

Android and other smartphone owners can tap into the free registration service, which is available at all police precincts.

The school bus, which was not carrying any children, was at Church Avenue and East 21st  when a car crashed into the back of it, education and FDNY officials said.

Man Dead After Gas Station Fight

A man is dead after getting into a fight with a gas station attendant in Queens. NY1's Vanessa Yurkevich filed the following report.

A heated discussion over a broken ATM machine at a gas station in Long Island City turned to blows early Thursday morning. Police say 28-year-old Oscar Arzeno threw the first punch and gas attendant Jasjeet Walia returned blows. Arzeno died later that morning at Elmhurst Hospital.

"The deceased was trying to get money out of the ATM machine, couldn't get money out, or if was not functioning for him," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. "He started to kick the machine, the attendant intervenes, talks to him."

Arzeno was found unconscious and unresponsive at the scene. Walia, who was questioned and released, says he was defending himself and claims Arzeno appeared to be intoxicated.

"He was attacking me violently," Walia said. "I had to do whatever I had to do to defend myself. I didn't want to get hurt. I was scared."

Arzeno's family says Walia went too far.

"My brother tried to run across the street and the pursuer went after him and started beating him on the street," said Chris Polanco, the victim's brother.

Earlier this week, a gas attendant was shot in the Bronx. Walia, who is trained in martial arts, said he didn't want this incident to be a repeat.

"I wanted to find a way to keep him down and keep him on the floor. I finally got my chance. I kept him on a hold until the cops showed up," he said. "I didn't want to give him enough space that he could reach for something in his pocket."

Arzeno's mother and fiance say they want Walia put in jail. Arzeno was scheduled to return home to Florida the day he died. The investigation is ongoing and the medical examiner has yet to determine the cause of death.

The family says they will hold a viewing for Arzeno on Tuesday in Corona. They plan to burry him in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

Driver In Custody After Bronx Chase Injures Three Officers

Three city police officers are being treated for injuries and an 18-year-old driver in custody following a car chase this morning that allegedly involved a stolen car on the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx.

The New York City Police Department says the chase began just before 10 a.m. in the expressway's southbound lanes where it crosses over Third Avenue.

Witnesses say a silver Nissan Altima could be seen driving on the lefthand shoulder followed by several police cars.

At one point, witnesses say the driver turned around and began driving the wrong way.

Police say an unknown number of cars were hit or sideswiped before officers were able to stop the driver and place him under arrest.

One driver who spoke with NY1 at the scene says she was afraid her car would be hit head on.

"He cut me off completely, I broad-sided him. So then, I started pulling over to the shoulder. He was on the shoulder as well. Then he started backing up; I hit him again. Then he started backing up in reverse all the way down the freeway. Yeah it was pretty intense. A couple of minutes later he started heading straight for us and was just praying he'd swerve away in time," said the driver.

One witness says the car appeared to have been stolen from a sales lot because it still had a dealer sticker on it.

The three officers were taken to Cornell Medical Center for treatment.

The fire department says one other person was taken to Lincoln Hospital for treatment

Man Shoots Brother Before Killing Self in Borough Park, Sources Say

BOROUGH PARK — A dispute between two brothers ended in one being shot by the other who then apparently killed himself, police and neighbors said.

Police said they were called to 1449 43rd Street near 14th Avenue just after midnight on Wednesday after a 63-year-old man was shot in the back and struck in the head.

Several hours later, they discovered the body of another man inside that address, the victim of an apparent suicide. Neighbors said the two men were brothers.

Neighbors and news reports identified the dead man as Tom Athanasatos, 74, who had lived in and maintained the building since his mother's death years ago.

His brother, James, works in real estate, according to several people who live on the block. The two were known to have fought over selling the house, which their mother had owned, with neighbors saying Tom was reluctant to do so.

Around 12:30 Wednesday morning, Malky Goldberg, 40, said she heard two people arguing. About an hour later, she came out onto the street and saw a man slumped over on the sidewalk, surrounded by emergency crews.

"He was bent over and bloody," Goldberg said. "He was pouring blood from his back and his head."

Police said he was taken to Lutheran Hospital in stable condition.

Several hours later, Tom's body was discovered inside 1449 43rd Street, the victim of an apparent suicide.

Angel Roldan Jr., 54, who has lived on the block since 1977, called Tom "great, generous, quiet" and said the man diligently maintained his home after his mother died several years ago.

"He left it just the way it was," Roldan Jr. said. "Where's he going to go? He's been living there for 40 years."

Motorcycle Theft Ring's Bikes Vanish From NYPD Lot

THE BRONX — Seven luxury motorcycles seized by the NYPD when it smashed a massive international bike theft ring this summer have vanished from a police facility where they were stored, DNAinfo.com New York has learned.

The stunning "Gone In 60 Seconds" heist from the NYPD's Auto Crime and Narcotics Division location at 500 Abbott St. on a dead end block on the Bronx and Mt. Vernon border was discovered Monday.

"On The Inside" sources say the flashy red, green and orange bikes worth tens of thousands of dollars had been stored in a box truck in the police facility's parking lot.

The lot is not heavily protected, but does have a security guard booth near the entrance. It is apparently not manned by NYPD personnel.

The embarassing theft immediately triggered an NYPD Internal Affairs investigation amid fears of an inside job.

One source speculated that remnants of the international bike trafficking ring tracked their bikes via GPS devices on them to the Bronx site where they were vulnerable to be stolen again. The box truck was left behind.

It was unclear how the thieves broke into the box truck and how they took off without being spotted.

"How they off-load that many motorcycles without ...being seen is insane," the source said.

The missing motorcycles were part of a compliment of 63 vehicles worth $500,000 that were seized during a 17-month, multi-agency investigation spearheaded by the NYPD Auto Crime Division and theManhattan District Attorney's Rackets Bureau which included several federal agencies.

The probe culminated in the arrests of 33 suspects who authorities said were responsible for virtually all the motorcycle thefts in the Big Apple.

"These criminals have a magic act," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said at a press conference July 25 announcing the bust at Police Headquarters where more than a dozen of the bikes were on display, along with an array of confiscated firearms.

"They would make motorcycles disappear and guns appear on the streets of our city," Kelly said.

It was unclear whether any of the bikes shown off by Kelly that day wound up in the Bronx lot.

Kelly explained that some of the bikes were sold intact to dealers in the U.S., while others were dismantled and sold in Caribbean countries and in Africa.

"The streets served as an outdoor showroom where the crews went shopping," he said.

All the bikes seized by the NYPD were supposed to end up in their Auto Crime Division facility in Queens, sources said.

It was not clear why this group of motorcycles wound up stashed in the box truck.

The stolen motorcycle probe began in Lower Manhattan with the theft of a single Yamaha motorcycle in TriBeca in the Spring of 2011.

Investigators soon found a link to an organized network of criminals who were also stealing motorcycles in Brooklyn and Queens.

They also discovered that the ring was peddling guns in the city that they had purchased in the south, and embarked on a full-scale probe that included undercover cops, visual surveillance and electronic eavesdropping.

The well-organized criminal ring sometimes photographed unmarked police cars in neighborhoods where they were eyeing bikes they wanted to steal.

They even dispatched what Kelly described as "blocker cars" to divert the attention of the police by driving erratically if officers were seen in the vicinity where they were stealing a motorcycle.

The ring — with suspects from Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island with nicknames like "Moron," "Jersey Dred" and "Jackie Legs" — also were involved in car insurance fraud.  One of the suspects even used his grandmother as a lookout.

L.I. Teen Charged in HS Bomb Threat

A Long Island teenager is facing charges he made threats against his high school.

Seventeen-year-old Ryan Bernhardt pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Wednesday in a Hempstead courtroom. Bail was set at $30,000.

Police say he was overheard making threats inside a bagel store near Massapequa High School on Tuesday.

Witnesses told police he said he "wanted to bomb the school and be a terrorist," as well as other threatening comments. He also said he had a list of people he wished had been at the movie theater shootings in July in Aurora, Colo., prosecutors said, according to Newsday.

He was charged with making a terrorist threat, which is a felony. Attorney Richard Stafford said his client was an honor student and "a good kid."

Bernhardt had no weapons in his possession, nor were any found in his home.

The teen's father, Bob Bernhardt, told Newsday that after the school said the threats would be reported to police, he thought, "I didn't know it'd turn into all this," he said.

"In this day and age they have to take it so seriously, but it's my kid," he said."

Massapequa principal Barbara Williams says all threats are taken very seriously. She added Bernhardt also faces school sanctions.

"It's a very safe neighborhood," he said. "It's a family-oriented restaurant. They're very loyal to their regulars and they have many regulars."

"It's just so out of character for the block, for the restaurant," he added. "This is a place where people come to feed their kids."

Man Had Extensive Weapons Arsenal In Apartment,

A Queens man is under arrest after police say they found an arsenal of weapons in his apartment.
Police say they got a report of someone firing shots into the air in front of 20-11 Shore Boulevard in Astoria last Sunday.
Investigators say they later identified 53-year-old Michael Millazzo from surveillance video and got a search warrant for his home.
During the search, police say they found a cache of guns, tasers, machetes and knives of different sizes.
They also found more than 10,500 rounds of ammunition.
Neighbors say Millazzo lived in the apartment for 11 years and was known for unusual behavior.
"Sometimes I would look at him at the supermarket where I would wash my clothes next door," said one neighbor. "And I'd be afraid of him. But I know that he lived here. But he's a very strange person."
"Between us, he had a lot of conflicts with them," said another. "He would be belligerent to them. He would spray mace under their door at one point. He swept dead roaches from his apartment under their door into their apartment."
"I'm afraid for my neighbors," said a third. "I can take care of myself but my neighbor's in a wheelchair and if this guy went on a kill-crazy rampage, innocent people are gonna get killed. So it's a lot better not having someone like that in your neighborhood at all."
Millazzo faces dozens of charges, including criminal use of a firearm, reckless endangerment and weapons possession.
