Carjacking Suspect Dies After Shoot-Out





 A carjacker ended up dead after a string of bad decisions that started with targeting a Newark police officer as his victim.

The off-duty police officer shot the armed man who tried to carjack him early on Saturday morning.

It happened at about 5:15 a.m. on Kerrigan Blvd. in the Vailsburg section of Newark.

Police say a man with a gun attempted to carjack the cop. A shoot-out started between the officer and the suspect. The carjacker was shot in the exchange of gunfire.

He jumped into a stolen car that had other people in it and they sped away. They crashed a short distance from the scene and the man with the gunshot wound was thrown from the vehicle.

He was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:30 a.m. His name had not been released. The other people in the car ran off and were not captured.

The name of the officer was being withheld for safety concerns. The officer was taken to University Hospital after the shooting and was treated for shock.

A firearm was found at the scene of the shooting and another firearm was found in the get away car.
