The shooting that killed a longtime employee at a Newark, N.J. pizzeria over the weekend was believed to be targeted, and was not an attempted robbery, officials said Monday.
Calvin Johnson, 55, was shot at Golden Pizzeria and Grill at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday in what police had thought was a robbery.
The suspect walked in and demanded money from the cashier when Johnson intervened, police initially said.
Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio said Monday that it now appears Johnson, a father of six, was targeted and that a robbery was not the motive.
Johnson, a 35-year employee at the family-owned pizzeria, was shot twice in the chest.
His wife, Nina Patton, pleaded for those with information about the killing to come forward.
"If anybody should see this and know any information of the young people who shot my husband... please, please call the police," she said.
