Police say Edgar Algarin, 26, called 911 over the weekend, claiming one of the two children in his care had gone into cardiac arrest.
Investigators say when they responded to the Mott Haven apartment, Algarin told them he found the three-year-old little girl unconscious in bed.
He was later questioned about the night's events, and taken into custody earlier today.
Algarin is now awaiting arraignment on murder and manslaughter charges.
