One Dead in Suspicious L.I. Fire

One person was killed in a fire early Monday in Freeport, and detectives are investigating whether the fire was set intentionally, officials said.

The fire, at 117 Craig Ave., started around 6 a.m., Nassau County Police said.

A witness said a volunteer firefighter told him the victim was a woman.

"It's horrible, it's terrible," said the witness, Paul Martin, who did not know the family. "This is really a big surprise to the neighborhood and it's really a true tragedy."
