A woman is dead following an elevator accident this morning inside a Manhattan office building.
The New York City Fire Department says it happened around 10:30 a.m. inside the building located at 285 Madison Avenue in Midtown.
a female passenger, who has not been identified, was getting on the elevator at the first floor when it abruptly shot up, trapping her in a blind shaft between the first and second floors.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other women in their 20's who were also riding in the elevator were taken to New York University Hospital and treated for trauma.
One employee of the building who spoke with NY1 says he believes he was riding up in the same elevator shaft when the elevator plunged.
"The elevator was either next to me or one over, I heard this loud 'boom, crash,' and the whole thing kind of shaked. I got off and I didn't really think too much of it, then I heard somebody died," said the employee.
"It was extreme. A couple of the girls on my floor were crying and really panicked," said another employee.
The 28-story building is owned by Wire & Plastic Products, the parent company of advertising agency Young & Rubicam.
In a statement, the company says it was a "tragic accident."
An investigation is now underway.
