A New York City Police Department detective shot and wounded a suspect while he busted an alleged drug sale in Inwood, Manhattan on Tuesday, but the suspect's son said it was a case of mistaken identity.
Police say they found a 23-year-old man selling drugs at 26 Post Avenue by Dyckman Street shortly after 5 p.m.
When a detective identified himself and tried to arrest the alleged drug dealer, a 43-year-old man put the officer in a choke hold, according to the NYPD.
The detective then struggled with the two suspects, when police say he fired his gun and hit the 43-year-old man in the abdomen.
The shot man was brought to Harlem Hospital and is in police custody, and was awaiting charges as of late Tuesday.
The 23-year-old suspect fled to another building on Post Avenue where he was arrested, and he was brought to NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Center for a cut on his head.
The officer who fired the gun was also treated in NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Center for neck and shoulder injuries.
However, the son of the 43-year-old suspect said his father thought the drug bust was an attack on his neighbor.
"He got shot in the stomach, trying to stop an unidentified cop in a scuffle with a civilian, a kid I grew up with, my dad's neighbor," said the shot suspect's son. "He went to break it up, the cops shot him in the stomach, and he's in trauma. They won't let me know anything that's going on."
Inwood residents have been concerned about a recent rise in crime in the neighborhood.
