A Long Island public safety officer is charged with fatally striking a pedestrian while driving drunk in a marked Town of Hempstead Public Safety Patrol car.
Nassau County police say Robert Core, 42, was on duty at the time of the accident. It happened at 11:24 p.m. on Thursday in East Meadow as Core was responding to a call in Levittown.
The accident occurred on Hempstead Turnpike, in front of the Nassau University Medical Center.
A volunteer Levittown ambulance crew was leaving NUMC when they heard the crash and immediately responded to the scene. The 50-year-old man who was struck died at the hospital at 11:43 p.m. The victim's name was not released.
Core was charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter and with driving while intoxicated.
Core also was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
