Three men were killed on the Garden State Parkway in Monmouth County when the sport utility vehicle they were riding in hit a guardrail and overturned early Monday.
Four other people were seriously injured in the crash, which occurred just after 5 a.m. in the northbound express lanes near milemarker 112.6 in Middletown Township.
State police spokesman Sgt. Julian Castellanos says the driver somehow lost control of the vehicle and struck the right guardrail. The SUV then overturned at least twice, ejecting five of the passengers.
Three of the ejected passengers were killed. The other two, along with the driver and another passenger, were taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where they were in critical condition.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
