MONSEY — A fire broke out this morning and destroyed an unoccupied house slated for demolition.
The fire at 178 Maple Ave. was reported at 7:16 a.m.
It appeared to start in the basement, and spread to the floor above, Monsey First Assistant Chief Rick LaGarde said.
Firefighters went into the house but had to leave when the floors started collapsing because the building was compromised, he said. They regrouped outside and attacked the fire.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters from several departments battled the blaze, including Monsey, Spring Valley, Hillcrest, Thiells and Suffern.
The house had been vacant for two or three weeks and was slated for demolition, LaGarde said. Now, it will be demolished today because the fire left it unsafe
