The report, on the NY Star Ledger, cited witnesses from the scene. The report claimed that the man "may have" pulled the gun from a backpack.
NYPD officers and Secret Service agents shouted for people to get down as they tackled the man. It happened at the corner of Church and Vessey Streets.
President Obama had just left the World Trade Center when it happened.
Officers believed he was acting suspiciously. They emptied his messenger bag, then brought him inside a post office located steps from the trade center site. At least one officer had a gun drawn.
The man was questioned and released. He was not armed.
